The kids have flown the coop, at long last there’s some cash to spare and the old family estate wagon is on its last legs. So what’s a true blue baby boomer to do? Why, spoil yourself of course and splash out on a little red rocket, a ripper roadster or full throttle motorbike.

Yes, it’s mid-life crisis time and time to revive the inner rev-head and hit the road in style. If money is no object then the top of your list at $8 million would be the Maybach Exelero, the most expensive road-going car in the world. Unfortunately, there was only one ever made and it’s taken. Then there’s the Lamborghini Veneno at $4.5 million, the Lykan Hypersport at $3.5 million or even the Bugatti Veyron at $2.6 million. Your budget only stretches to $1 million? Then check out the McLaren F1 at $970,000 or the Ferrari Enzo at approximately $670,000.

More realistically, here are some suggested mid-life crises rides that ooze style and oomph and will still have you purring with delight.

Ferrari 458 Spider

The latest addition to the Ferrari range is the 458 Spider, a mid-rear engine two-seater featuring a fully retractable aluminium hard-top, a world first for a sports car with this layout. Apart from category-topping performance, the 458 Spider also boasts class-leading fuel consumption and emissions levels. Parking this proud prancing pony in your garage will set you back about $590,000.

With a choice of Roadster Coupe and Roadster Coupe Sports, you get an instant icon that is balanced and lightweight, with strong design from bonnet to boot. You too can zoom, zoom, zoom from around $51,683.

Holden Sandman panel van

Really want to relive your younger days back in the carefree Seventies? Grab a Holden Sandman panel van, preferably with garish murals on both sides, strap the surfboards on top and head for the beach. First launched in 1974, the Holden Sandman was an icon at every beach and a warning to all parents that their daughters were no longer safe going to the drive-in movies on a Saturday night. A classic 1970s Sandman will set you back from around $17,000 to $60,000.
