While many hanker for a car with an exotic marque and sporty features, the reality is that most cars purchased are chosen for proven reliability at an affordable price. Hence, the best selling cars of all time are those we see pulled up at every intersection and parked at our local supermarket on a daily basis.

According to the Wall Street Cheat Sheet, here are the five models that have outstripped all others when it comes to popularity. While they may not be the prettiest, these cars have a proven track record for reliability, safety and affordability:

5. Ford Escort

Selling 18 million units worldwide between 1968 and 2000, the American Ford Escort enjoyed greater popularity in Europe, than it did in the US. In June 1974, just six years into the car’s UK production, Ford announced the completion of its two millionth Ford Escort. It was a milestone previously unmatched by any Ford model outside the USA.

In Australia, the Ford Escort was also popular and a 1970s model in good condition can still fetch around $8000 on the second hand market. Due to its timeless popularity, Ford is currently planning to relaunch the Escort into the Chinese market in 2014.

4. Volkswagen Beetle

Launched as the “people’s car” in Germany in 1938, the Volkswagen Beetle has one of the longest lifespans of any production vehicle today. Indeed, more than 23 million of the original Beetles were sold worldwide before a significant redesign in the 1990s put a modern spin on the much-loved classic. A current model Beetle costs from $33,914, while an original ‘bug’ costs from $2000 up to $20,000 depending on condition and age.

3. Volkswagen Golf

With 27.5 million cars sold since its launch in 1974, the Volkswagen Golf has proven to be even more popular than the iconic Beetle. Though it’s not as cute as the Beetle, it’s a more practical family car and may well be the real “people’s car”. Fresh from the dealer, a new Golf costs from around $22,990 to $70,000.

2. Ford F-Series

The second best-selling vehicle of all time, the Ford F-Series utility has been a best seller since 1948, with more than 35 million sold. A dependable work horse available in many configurations, the F-Series is a firm favourite with tradies and farmers around the world.

A new F-Series truck that can handle tough terrain and haul massive loads, while boasting a luxury interior with state-of-the art technology and comfort will set you back around $100,000 in Australia.

1. Toyota Corolla

Topping the list as the best-selling car of all time is the trusty and ubiquitous Toyota Corolla, with roughly 37.5 million units sold since its launch in 1966. This solid, dependable, clean-lined family car has to be one of Japan’s greatest exports. Toyota has unleashed fresh, updated models, including the sporty Corolla Hatch priced from around $19,990, which is a popular first car for young drivers and perfect as a zippy and reliable small car for city living.
