These days, it feels like everything is getting more expensive, including the price of cars. Australians daydream fondly of the days when you could get a brand new car for less than 10k. Are those days gone forever? Not necessarily. Manufacturers around the World are still producing cars that cost less than 10k and they might start showing up more often in Australia.

The Chery J1 – A Bargain Seller in Australia

The Chery J1 is proof that you can still buy a brand new car in Australia for less than 10k, though not by much less. This model sells new for $9,990. It’s a hatchback that can seat five, though there’s not too much leg room in the back. The Chery J1 offers respectable 6.7L/100km fuel efficiency and includes air conditioning, power steering, power windows, and a CD player. You definitely won’t be the fastest car on the road with the Chery J1 but you’ll get a brand new for less than 10k. For that price, it’s hard to ask for much more.

The Tata Nano – The Cheapest Car in the World

The cheapest, brand new car in the World is the Tata Nano. This car is made in India and sells for around $3,000. Tata created this car for citizens of the developing World who are looking to drive, but can’t afford most models on the market. For $3,000 you don’t get too much. The Nano is barely 3 metres long and only seats two. It has rear wheel drive and can hit a maximum speed of 105 kilometres per hour. Drivers should keep this car in the city though as the Nano wouldn’t hold up well in a high speed crash. While this car only exists in the developing World, Tata is considering expanding to the United States which means this car could end up in Australia as well.

The Geely MR – A Sedan at an Ultra-Low Price

The Geely MR is nearly as affordable as the Tata Nano, but offers more room. This Chinese vehicle sells for a little over $5,000 brand new. It sells as both a four door sedan and a five door hatchback. It comes with either a 1.3 L or 1.5 L engine which doesn’t offer a ton of power, but still gets drivers where they need to be. The Geely MR also looks more normal and less boxy than the Nano and the Chery J1 so drivers won’t stand out as much with this vehicle.

The market for discount cars is growing fast in the developing World. As Indian, Chinese, and Eastern European manufactures continue to develop cars for their local markets, we should see more brand-new cars for under 10k soon.
