Despite Australia’s own automotive manufacturing industry being in decline, Aussies still love their new cars more than ever.

CarsGuide reported a few days ago that this July car sales were up to an all-time high, with smartly buyers taking advantage of low-interest rates which could rise due to currency pressures later on in the year. It certainly seems like the time to buy is now if you want to take advantage of these prime deals.

This July beat the record set only in June, where Australians bought more new cars than any other month in recorded motoring history, with a total of 125,850 new vehicles sold alone. This isn’t even taking into account the thousands of used cars sold in the same timeframe.

New cars sales have been growing by about 2.5 per cent month-to-month, with a rise of 2.7 per cent in July. If this trend continues, as many as 1.1 million cars could be sold by the end of the year.

June also saw over 100,000 new car registrations, showing that demand is still going up and up, with a further increase July’s numbers.

Top Car Brands

In terms of car brands, who came out top? Surprise, surprise, it’s Toyota, who are set to be Australia’s no. 1 brand for a whopping 13 years in a row!

It certainly helps that the Toyota Corolla is set to be Australia’s favourite car for the third year in a row, taking the top selling spot for five months already this year. If you want to see a full breakdown of the sales numbers and how they’ve been fluctuating, check out the graph from Motoring.com.au below.

Holden is suffering month by month, being beaten out of the top 3 spot by Hyundai. Holden is facing the possibility of finishing fourth in the sales race this year, which would be the first time the Australian brand has been out the top 3 since they started in 1948.

Aussies still love their SUVs

In line with recent trends, the favourite car-type of choice for Aussies is still the SUV. SUV sales overall are up 13.4 per cent on last month, and 13.7 per cent up year on year. In fact, SUVs made up 35 per cent of new car sales throughout July. You can see this reflected in the major car brands announcements. In the last month we have seen the Toyota Fortuner, Jeep’s C-SUV and the Infiniti QX80 all announced for the Australian market.

Small SUVs are doing especially well, replacing hatchbacks and micro-cars, both of which are on the decline.
