The battle for top dog is on and two giants of the industry are now fighting flat out. Toyota has committed the full weight of its marketing in a bid to take this country’s number one car sales position away from the Mazda 3 which has been at the top for more than a couple of years. The latest Corollas boast a model range that starts at a competitive price and options up to full luxury or sports specification.

The new Corolla line-up will need all the boost it can get as Mazda are going very well with the all-conquering model 3. On paper there is little to choose between the cars and the challenge may all come down to the way the Mazda is seen as slightly bigger and better with more options as standard.

Certainly the few years the 3 has been at the top has resulted in Mazda’s new customers being impressed by the brand – a satisfaction that they have passed on which helps the model’s excellent reputation.

But Toyota has many assets the huge company is now putting into the fight. The marketing program is seeing massive dollars spent on the all-important TV advertising campaign and the extensive dealer network is being backed with many factory hand-outs.

Salesmen are being briefed how the many Corolla models have all been configured to exactly meet specific market segments where specific advantages can be demonstrated over the Mazda 3 models. And the price-fighting base Corolla models are genuinely competitive to ensure dealers have everything to sell.

And as for the cars: the all-important style department, the new Corollas definitely appear spot on, the 1.8 engines deliver good power & economy, and the range of transmissions are all super-sweet. It will be a hard fight with current sales numbers being very close.

Needless to say, Mazda is certainly not taking the Toyota move lightly and has committed considerable marketing budgets to retaining the 3’s bragging rights.
