Car manufacturers are always looking for new ways to improve their products and build brand recognition. Sometimes to achieve these goals they come up with some pretty wild ideas. Looking for something new? How about car interiors that feel like human skin? If Nissan’s research continues as planned, this could be the latest feature to hit the market.

Why is Nissan Developing these Interiors?

Nissan came up with the idea of car interiors built like human skin as it tried to find new ways to enhance comfort in its vehicles. Nissan’s engineers tested the comfort of passengers in seats of various different materials like leather and cloth. They also tested when passengers were sitting still or sliding, both common situations in a moving car. At the end of this testing, the engineers found that the most comfortable material was material that feels like a baby’s skin.

Are They Really Using Human Skin?

That’s the first question that jumps to mind when you hear about this product and the answer is no. Nissan doesn’t use real human skin. Naturally, this would be a huge ethical and legal dilemma as human skin is not exactly easy to come by, especially in the large quantities needed for Nissan’s product line. If Nissan really wanted to, they could turn to human skin that is artificially grown in a lab. They won’t though. Not only would this likely creep out customers, it would also be incredibly expensive. Human skin costs about $250,000 per square meter in a lab. Instead, Nissan is working on a new type of leather that uses the fingerprint pattern you find on human skin.

When Will This Feature Be Available?

Nissan hasn’t announced yet when these new interiors will be available. They are still working on developing the product line. Reports indicate that these new interiors will be ready in the near future, perhaps within a few years. When this hits the market, you’ll definitely hear about it because a launch like this doesn’t stay quiet.

How Will Consumers React to this Idea?

It’s hard to say how well Nissan’s new product will do. The idea of car seats that feel like human skin is a little unsettling, even if you know the material is actually leather. Nissan may want to start marketing this material under a different name to prevent this uneasiness. At the same time, they say any publicity is good publicity. Nissan has already started to get quite a bit of attention with this idea and should get even more once these interiors hit the market. They might be glad to receive all this attention especially if it gets more people trying out the seats to see if this material really is that much better.

Just when you think you’ve seen it all, Nissan comes out with car interiors that feel like human skin. While there’s no guarantee this idea will be a success, it’s definitely going to get people talking.
