Chances are if you’ve ever spent any time watching a Formula One race, you will have heard the names Ferrari, McLaren, and Mercedes. On the other hand, if you’re more of a celebrity watcher, you may have seen the likes of Justin Bieber showing off in his Lamborghini, or Daniel Craig casually stepping out of his Aston Martin. You may have even heard of the world’s fastest super car, the Bugatti Veyron.

But regardless of which brand you lust after, these “super cars” are mostly only available to a relative few who have some serious dosh to spend. If, like most of us, the only place you’re likely to buy a car of this sort is in your dreams, don’t worry, you’re not alone. But before you drift off to sleep, you should probably know that the list of super cars doesn’t end there. We’ve unearthed some super cars you’ve probably never heard of, but which are no less worthy of your devoted attention.

Icona Vulcano

Whether it’s the 950HP rear-wheel drive H-Turismo V12, or the 870HP four-wheel drive H-Competizione V6, the Icona Vulcano grabbed a lot of headlines upon its stunning 2013 entry into the market. Featuring a tonne of angular panels, vents and swoops, the Vulcano was automatically catapulted into exclusive “hypercar” territory when news broke that it also boasted a price tag of USD $3.8 million. Quite a way to turn heads for a first effort from the previously little-known Shanghai-based manufacturer, Icona; though the fact the Vulcano accelerates from 0 to 120mph in only 9.0 seconds could also guarantee this reaction. But before you start getting your hopes up, at this stage the Vulcano is a one-off which has been produced exclusively for the Asian market.

Lykan Hypersport

The limited edition Lykan Hypersport – from Lebanese-based W Motors – also launched in 2013. This futuristic beast looks like it’s come straight from the set of a Robocop or Batman movie, and is powered by a twin turbo flat-six 3.7-litre engine, which generates 740HP and reaches 60 miles per hour in 2.8 seconds, up to a top speed of 239mph. But perhaps the thing that most defines this as a new breed of super car (apart from the USD $3.4 million price tag), is the fact that it is the first car to have diamonds in its headlights – the front lights feature titanium LED blades with 420 15-carat diamonds. Perhaps this is why only seven have been built.

Mazzanti Evantra

Before we go any further, it would be sheer folly to talk about luxury super cars without mentioning the Italians, and this is where the ultra-limited Mazzanti Evantra comes into the equation. The name Evantra comes from the ancient Etruscan goddess of immortality, and is also said to represent an object that is unique, eternal and exclusive. Living up to these lofty ideals, this 701HP, 7.0-litre V8 reaches 62mph in only 3.2 seconds, and catches the eye with its rear-hinged butterfly doors and massive air intakes. But with only five of these cars being offered by Tuscany-based Mazzanti Automobili each year, if you blink, you’ll miss it.

Rimac Concept_One

Although it is still only on the drawing board, the Rimac Concept_One isn’t far away from being realised, and it already has people queuing up. Dubbed the world’s first electric supercar, this 1088HP vehicle will run amazingly on electricity alone. Also tipped to go from 0-62mph in 2.8 seconds, the Concept_One is likely to be more affordable than some of the other cars on this list at a mere USD $1 million – and potentially more available, with a limited edition of 88 vehicles due to be produced. This stunning super car, with its distinctive exposed carbon side-graphic and 3D animated tail lights, is the work of Croatian-born supercar fanatic Mate Rimac, of Rimac Automobili.

Shayton Equilibrium

Rounding out our list is the Shayton Equilibrium, a Slovenian concept which, once built, will make eyes pop as it zips past at a top speed of 250mph, courtesy of its V12, 1099HP engine. The curves and contours of the Equilibrium mark it as not just another cookie-cutter super car, but as something unique and memorable. With only 20 expected to be made available, you’d better start saving up the USD $1.4 million you’ll need to buy one.
